sunscreen picAs you and your family spend the days outside by the pool, beach, or lake this summer, it can be easy to neglect your skin. Whether it is cloudy or sunny, skin protection is important to your family’s health. With the abundance of skin care products available on the market, finding the right product for your family can be challenging.

Make protecting your family members’ skin a breeze.

Age Matters. If your baby is younger than 6 months of age, sunscreen use is not recommended. At this age, it is best to keep your baby out of direct sunlight. If your baby must be in sunlight, dress your baby in protective clothing with sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. In addition, using a stroller or carrier with a cover over the baby will help combat the sun’s rays. Once your child is over 6 months old, sunscreen can then be used as a form of skin protection.

Which sunscreen should I choose? According to the Environmental Working Group’s recommendation of skin protection products, parents should use physical rather than chemical sunscreens on their young children. Unlike chemical sunscreens that sink into the skin, physical sunscreens typically use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which sit atop the skin to protect your child and are less likely to cause irritation to sensitive skin. The EWG also urges the use of sunscreens that do not contain Oxybenzone, which can disrupt hormones, or Vitamin A, which may increase skin’s sensitivity to the sun. In addition, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends that a good sunscreen should provide broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays, a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or greater, and water resistance. Finally, lips are also a target of the sun’s rays and should be protected with a lip balm that contains sunscreen.
